A third container from BookAid has arrived in Jos, containing 637 cartons of books Grace & Light will sell to raise funds for our work in Nigeria.
This container was loaded at BookAid’s warehouse in South East London during December and arrived at our Jos headquarters in mid-January. The office team are enjoying opening cartons and discovering what is inside each. Books range from weighty theological tomes to thin fun booklets for children.
Books from the first 50 cartons they opened were sold alongside the remaining books left from the second container of books that was delivered in late 2015.
Half the clearance books were sold and all the new books at full price, raising N900,000 (approx. £1,800). This money is funding the outer wall around the headquarters site so it is at least five courses of blocks high.
“We did this to delineate our site so nomadic herders and their animals, plus local people, realise it is private land and keep out. The wall also helps protect our buildings, plants and trees and helps staff and visitors feel safer,” explained international coordinator Tassie Ghata.
“Without the wall people may believe the land has no owner and construct their own buildings, making it harder to prove our ownership to local communities and nomadic herders.”
